Is software cracking bad?
I know someone who is an amateur at software cracking, and he says that though it is illegal, it's also a valuable skill to know as well.
The kind of programs he cracks are
1. To further what he knows about reverse engineering
2. Never distributed to anyone else
3. Programs he would never use anyway (like web cam software when he doesn't own a camera)
He says the knowledge he gains from doing stuff like that helps him because he also programs and knowing assembly gives him more insight into what he does, and that he learns techniques that he can counter in his own software as anti-cracking measures.
I insist that everything illegal is also bad, but I can also see his point of view.

Yes, it's a very good skill to have in a world of proprietary software. I'd love to know how many of today's Linux driver reverse engineering maestros got their start writing nibbler programs and hacking C64 floppy images to remove manual checks. Does it lead to lost profits for companies? Sure, but guys are always going to do something bad, and at least they're learning a lot here. Plus, imagine a world without no-CD cracks. It'd be real hard if not impossible to get some of my paid games to run in Wine, then. Even if he was distributing to other folks, I wouldn't judge him too much, but it seems like he's a traditional hacker who just lusts after knowledge and a deep understanding of computer technology. To him, a digital chain liink fence is an invitation for scaling. You'll just have to understand that.

Also, it sounds like much of what he does violates IP, but is nothing that Linux devs don't winkingly do and then contribute right into distributions. Really, it's petty stuff that's rarely prosecuted unless you're doing it to Creative and a few other companies, or you're seeking financial gain for your work. Also, illegal does not equal bad. The State is not the sole arbitrator of morality, I should hope. It's something we subjectively define based upon our own social positionality. Don't let The State transpose its ideology upon you!
